There are many causes of TMJ dysfunction including dental issues (e.g. malocclusion), stress, spinal dysfunction, posture, whiplash etc. Hence, a multi-modal approach to care if often indicated depending on the cause – but not always. It is quite rare for the problem to be as a results of the jaw joints themselves but it is rather that the reduction in the ability of one or the other to adapt to changing situations and thereby causing imbalances which produce the symptoms you recognise. Chiropractors work on reducing any associated muscular or spinal imbalances which will affect the TMJ directly or indirectly. The treatment is non-invasive and we have robust tests to help us determine if you are in the right place at the outset. Chiropractic treatment of the jaw may provide not only effective symptomatic relief but also improved jaw function.
